Coffee Sourcing & Sustainability

2 min reading time

Our coffee importers runs meaningful and supportive projects in the coffee growing regions, and only source coffee from origins that is ethically sourced and that has been paid above the minimum Fairtrade price, and always way above the market price for our specialty beans.

K+ cares about sustainability and we believe good coffee Worth More Than Fair.

Coffee sourcing and coffee sustainability
Yes, so much so our founder Tina, who has a degree in sustainability, has done extra studies in coffee sustainability and decided like many responsible specialty coffee brands, K+ should provide all our customers a sustainable supply of quality and distinctive coffee that is Free from Defects, and making sure that the coffee growers receive the support they need in the right way.

Defect coffee beans
This is utterly important to us and our coffee importers, who runs meaningful and supportive projects in the coffee growing regions, and only source coffee from origins that is ethically sourced and that has been paid above the minimum Fairtrade price, and always way above the market price for our specialty beans.

Bruce Wydick, professor of Economics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco has listed 10 Reasons Why Fair-trade Coffee Doesn't Work:

fairtrade coffee sourcing

  1. The flawed design of the Fair trade system undermines its own benefits
  2. Fair trade attracts bad beans
  3. Fair trade imposes significant costs on impoverished growers
  4. Fair trade doesn’t help the poorest growers
  5. Relatively little fair-trade coffee originates from the poorest countries
  6. Purported benefits of the fair-trade system lack transparency
  7. The fair-trade system is inefficient at transferring coffee consumers’ goodwill to producers
  8. Direct trade is probably more efficient and sustainable than fair trade
  9. We should encourage less coffee production, not more
  10. Fair-trade coffee fails to address the root of poverty issues

At K+, we believe a good cup of coffee need to be judged fairly, so that blind cupping is done for our green beans. This means the coffee beans are judged purely by its quality, without prior knowledge of how much it costs and where its from, before being presented to our roaster for Blind Tasting. Our roaster then decide which ones to pick, and based on their quality and characteristics, to decide further which will be used to make specialty blends that’s best for espresso, or as single origin that’s perfect for filter, or even better, for both.
